Split Prong
split prong | ˈsplit prȯŋ
noun
A prong setting, in which each prong is split, with each side being responsible for holding its own gemstone
A split prong setting is a type of ring setting that is designed to split the prong into two parts, with each side holding a single gemstone. A split prong may also have two ends of the prong on either side of a solitaire gemstone. The resulting shape can be pinched, flared, tapered or similarly split apart from the band. The prong itself is split apart to provide multiple points of contact on the center stone or to support multiple stones within the same setting. Split prongs are often selected because they provide intricate detail to the band.
