A sedimentary stone or rock is one that is formed by the deposit of various forms of sediment over a long period of time. These types of rocks can form in a variety of conditions but commonly consist of a number of different materials. As a result, within sedimentary rock a number of different types of gemstones can form, including jasper, opal, zircon, and malachite. These, along with other gemstones and precious materials are mined from sedimentary stone or rock in a number of different ways.
