Symmetry
sym·me·try | ˈsi-mə-trē
noun
A term for the uniformity of a gemstone's cut, including the shape and placement of facets
Symmetry refers to the uniformity of a cut of gemstone, referring to the shape, placement, and size of the facets on the gemstone. It is therefore not a naturally occurring characteristic, and is measured based on how effectively the stone was cut. Symmetry grades are provided by GIA ranging from Fair to Excellent, and are established by looking at the stone with a standard jeweler’s loupe (10x magnification). The symmetry of the stone can determine what types of settings it is suited for, and how it looks on display. It is therefore considered an important element when grading a stone, especially larger ones.
