Seal

seal | ˈsēl

noun

An engraving (intaglio) in stone or metal used to create an impression on a substance such as wax or clay

A seal consists of an engraved and often highly decorative intaglio that has a specific shape or image on it that can be used to leave a unique mark on documents. Carved from stone or metal, the seal is worked in clay or hot wax to leave its mark, and is typically small, handheld. Dating back to Ancient Egypt, seals became highly popular in the 18th and 19th century as industry expanded rapidly in Europe. Seals were used to mark important documents and to ensure a writ related to goods or transfer of wealth was recognized elsewhere. It was also used to seal important documents against prying eyes since the seal would need to be broken to open the envelope.
