Split Shank
split shank | ˈsplit shaŋk
noun
A ring design element which features a band that parts into two as it nears the head
A split shank refers to a special type of shank on a ring that splits apart as the band approaches the prongs and center stone at the head. The band splits into two a variable distance from the head based on design, and the type of setting desired for the center stone. There will be a resulting visible gap between the center stone and the band. The resulting strands of the split shank often contain smaller stones as well terminating at the center stone on an engagement ring or other type of ring.
