Spinel
spi·nel | spə-ˈnel
noun
A semi-precious gemstone consisting of an oxide of magnesium and aluminum that varies from colorless to ruby red to black
A spinel is a type of semi-precious gemstone. The presentation of the stone can vary dramatically. Some spinels are colorless while others are deep black or even bright ruby red. Spinels have become increasingly popular since the end of the 19th century. Before that, they were commonly misidentified as rubies, or as corundum. Today, Spinel is most commonly used in association with its designation as the birthstone for August. Spinel is most commonly found in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. It has also been found in Vietnam, Tanzania, and Kenya.
