Shank
shank | ˈshaŋk
noun
The part of a ring that encircles the finger, minus the setting
The shank is the lowest part of the ring, encircling the finger, but not including the setting. Because the shank is in direct contact with the finger and moves around constantly, it will wear down over time. As a result, the shank should be inspected regularly to ensure it remains strong and does not need to be recoated or updated to protect the setting. In some cases, if the shank is to the point that repairs won’t work, it’s important to have the ring remounted. Regular care and cleaning for the ring should prevent this from happening, or catch it well before it is needed.
