Sand Casting
sand cast·ing | ˈsand ka-stiŋ
verb
A casting method in which tempered sand is packed onto wood or metal pattern halves and then removed from the pattern, before metal is poured into the resultant cavities and the mold is broken to remove castings
Sand casting was the most popular method of casting for hundreds of years. It involves tempered sand being packed into a pair of wooden or metal halves of a pattern. They are then removed from that pattern and metal is poured into the cavities created by the process. The mold is then broken to remove the castings and retrieve the piece that was created. Sand casting was vital in the development of common casting procedures for large metal objects including iron, bronze, brass and aluminum. It was also used in some cases for jewelry casting. It has since been replaced by more modern casting processes.
