Shoulder
shoul·der | ˈshōl-dər
noun
The part of a ring between the shank and the center of the setting
The shoulder of the ring is the part where the shank and the setting connect with one another. Because of the variation in different types of settings, especially in diamond engagement rings, there are many different types of shoulders as well. These include parallel straight shoulders, tapering shoulders, channel set shoulders with diamonds running into the band of the ring, twisted shoulders, split shoulders, open shoulders, solid shoulders, flared shoulders, overlapping shoulders, claw set shoulders, and diamond encrusted shoulders. The type of shoulder used will depend both on the type of ring and the stone in the ring and its setting.
