Shield

shield | ˈshēld

noun

A piece of defensive armor, often elongated and adorned with designs

A shield is designed to protect its carrier in battle. Defensive in nature, they are often elongated, sometimes round and are often adorned with designs that represent the standing, family, or nation of the carrier. The associative crest can be presented in a number of ways, including with precious metals, paints, or other carefully applied elements for decorative purposes. The design of these shields were often taken by families or nations and applied to rings, pendants and other forms of jewelry as crests or other presentations. While less common today, many antique pieces have such designs on them.
