Setting

set·ting | ˈse-tiŋ

noun

A mechanism by which a stone is held by precious metal into a mounting

A jewelry setting is the mechanism by which the precious or semi-precious stone of a piece of jewelry is held in place in the precious-metal mounting. There are several different types of settings that convey a different aesthetic. The most common among these for rings include bezel settings, pave settings, channel settings, and prong settings. The term setting may also refer to the part of the jewelry where one or more stones are set. Because there are so many different types of settings and the situation for using each type varies depending on the number of stones, utility of the piece, and the means by which a stone is being displayed, the materials used vary substantially.
