Pit
pit | ˈpit
noun
An indentation on the surface of a diamond or gemstone
A pit is a type of inclusion that can be found on the surface of a gemstone or diamond. A pit is an indentation, that appears naturally and not from damage to the stone from cutting or wear. Such an inclusion appears on the surface of the gemstone and will open to the top of the stone where it is generally visible under magnification. The reason for a pit to be left in the stone is often to maximize the size of the finished gemstone as cutting it would have severely reduced the size of the stone. Pits are one type of inclusion, others of which include pinpoints, needles, feathers, cavities, and etch channels.
