Plot
plot | ˈplät
noun
A diagram of a gemstone's clarity characteristics
A plot is a diagram drawn of a gemstone, often a diamond, to identify any inclusions and flaws that might be present in the stone. There are typically multiple views in a plot - at least one for the top down and another from the side. The diagrams will include both visible and microscopic inclusions. Because almost all diamonds, except for the exceedingly rare flawless diamonds, have some inclusions, and a plot helps to map these for both proper valuation, and the purposes of identification in the case of damage or theft. Plotting is often used in the appraisal process.
