Milanese Chain

mi·la·nese chain | mə-ˈla-nēz chān

noun

A chain consisting of interwoven rows of small links, forming a mesh

A Milanese chain refers to a type of chain that has a number of interwoven rows that create small links between them. The result is a mesh in the chain. This type of pattern has been used in a number of modern applications, including watch bands, for which it is sometimes called a Milanese loop. Designed in the late 1800s in Milan, the Milanese chain or loop design style requires a special machine to create the fluid, consistent pattern that is seen in more modern applications. In watch bands, the Milanese pattern became popular in the 1970s as a more robust, resilient alternative to traditional watchbands.
