Marquise Cut

mar·quise cut | mär-ˈkēz kət

noun

A diamond cut that is elongated like an oval, but has a point at either end

A marquise-cut diamond is one that consists of an eye-like presentation with a massive surface area, larger than any other cut of diamond. The cut consists of 58 facets with 33 on the crown and 25 on the pavilion. Marquise cut diamonds were popularized in the 18th century in the court of Louis XV in France. It has also be called the “navette” cut, meaning “small boat” in French. The cut is considered to be a modification of the brilliant cut, giving it an appearance of being larger than the stone actually is. It also has the effect of making the wearer’s fingers and hands look slightly longer than they are.
