Mosaic

mo·sa·ic | mō-ˈzā-ik

noun

A design created by pressing pieces of stone glass or ceramic tiles called tesserae in mortar

Mosaic jewelry is defined by the pressing together of small pieces of stone glass, or ceramic tiles called tesserae into the mortar to create a vibrant, colorful image. The art of creating mosaics is known as micro mosaic and is a meticulous process that dates back thousands of years. Because of the nature of mosaic, it can be used by both professional jewelry artisans with precious metals and stones, or it can be performed by hobbyists to create beautiful pieces in the form of pendants, earrings, rings, and many more. A mosaic piece can be as simple a few small pieces of glass creating a small vista to a much more complex piece with hundreds or even thousands of pieces of tesserae.
