Mizpah Ring

miz·pah ring | ˈmizpə riŋ

noun

A broad, gold ring engraved with the word MIZPAH. Mizpah is a Hebrew word that means 'watchtower' and is loosely interpreted as 'May God watch over you'.

During the Victorian era, the practice of engraving rings and other types of jewelry with the word “MIZPAH” grew in popularity. The word is Hebrew and means “watchtower”. A loose definition is “May God watch over you,” and the jewelry is meant to be given as a token of either love or friendship. The term is commonly found on antique jewelry as a result, but is also still worn by many people as a continued reminder of friendship. Mizpah rings are most common, while pendants are still made and are sometimes designed to be split into two with each person wearing one half of the pendant.
