Tubogas
tu·bo·gas | ˈtü-bō-gəs
noun
A flexible, tubular chain
Tubogas literally translates to mean a “gas pipe” and is used to describe a certain type of flexible tubular chain that is formed by the pairing of multiple gold strips that have been tightly wound together. The resulting necklace is relatively flexible, hollow, and doesn’t require additional work such as soldering to hold it together. These types of necklaces were popularized in the 1930s and 1940s due to the scarcity and high price of certain jewelry materials during the war in Europe. There are several applications of the tubogas technique, and belts and bracelets have been made in addition to the necklaces for which the technique is most often known.
