noun
A rich, deep green variation of garnet
Tsavorite is a relatively new type of semi-precious gemstone, a variant of garnet, discovered in Kenya in 1967. The name is derived from Tsavo National Park where the stone was originally discovered. Tsavorite stones are a rich deep green color and are around a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. They have been found in relatively large sizes with the largest yielded cut stone being 325 carats. While they are still mined in the mines in Kenya, Tsavorite is also found in Pakistan Madagascar, Tanzania, and Antarctica.
