Trapezoid Cut

tra·pe·zoid cut | tra-ˈpēz-oyd kət

noun

A gemstone cut into a four-sided shape with a short side, a parallel long side, and two equal ends

A trapezoid cut gemstone is one that has four sides, one with a shorter length, two that are parallel and roughly the same, and a longer side that is parallel with the shorter end. Trapezoidal cut diamonds are commonly used for side stones to augment and help emphasize the center stone. They may also be used in step cut fashion, and are especially effective alongside princess cut diamonds. The center stone in such rings are often Asscher or emerald cut, allowing the three stones to sit closely against one another and creating a unique tableau. There are a number of unique applications for such a cut, especially for diamonds.
