Tortoise Shell
tor·toise shell | ˈtȯr-təs shel
noun
A mottled, nutty brown shell material with a spotted, striped, or sometimes even speckled pattern
Tortoise shell is a unique type of naturally occurring material that has a mottled, brown texture with a number of different possible types of patterns. Commonly used in jewelry and hair combs, it was eventually banned and is no longer allowed to be used for new pieces. Today, new items with a tortoiseshell pattern are artificial, often made with plastic. To determine if a piece is truly an antique tortoiseshell or a newer plastic alternative, heat can be applied to the surface. If it smells like burning hair, it is authentic. Plastic will smell more like chemicals.
