Founded in 1931, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is one of the foremost organizations in the world in grading and evaluating diamonds, pearls and other gemstones. The non-profit organization runs one of the most prestigious gemological grading laboratories in the world and is considered the leading source for information, education, and standards related to both gems and jewelry. GIA created the 4Cs of diamond grading in 1940, still used today as the standard means by which diamonds are evaluated for quality.
