Gilt
gilt | ˈgilt
adjective
Gold or something resembling gold and luxury
Gilt is a general term referring to an object that is covered in a thin layer of gold or has an otherwise golden appearance. The term applies to a number of different types of jewelry, antiques, and fine artwork including frames on paintings. Gilt often involves silver or another base metal with gold deposited on it by a chemical or electro-deposition process. Because gold can be applied in such thin layers, gilt allows an object to appear more luxurious with authentic gold, but without using a large amount of gold. Inexpensive items can then be presented in a very different way.
