The science and study of gemstones
Gemology is a field of science devoted to the study, cut, and valuation of precious gemstones. While gemology can consist of any number of trades, the core of the field is to identify gemstones. Gemologists work to study, grade, and value stones, and may specialize in a number of areas. Other professions within the field include appraisers, goldsmiths, jewelers, lapidaries, and general gemology scientists. Gemologists use a range of specialized tools including grading instruments, computers, and microscopes to evaluate gems and identify key characteristics that impact value. Gemology is an important field that can impact both private collectors obtaining valuation of heirloom pieces and those who deal in precious gemstones or the jewelry from which they are made.
