lu·cite | ˈlü-ˌsīt
noun
A clear, span plastic that can be molded and carved
Lucite is a brand name for polymethyl methacrylate or PMMA, a synthetic plastic that is also sometimes known as plexiglass, acrylic, or acrylic glass. It is specifically used as an alternative to glass in situations where it needs to be as resistant to breaking as possible. It can be molded or carved into specific shapes and was originally popularized in the 1940s for use in certain low-cost jewelry and purses. First developed in the mid-19th century, Lucite and other materials based on the same formula have been used in eyeglasses, medical procedures, glass replacement, dentistry, sculpture, and dozens of other applications.
