verb

The process of decorating metal by etching a design into its surface

Engraving is the process of decorating metal by etching a design into its surface. There are several ways to mark the surface of a metal, however, unlike laser marketing, engraving involves physically altering the surface of the metal. These changes are permanent and can be incredibly detailed depending on the method used for the metal being engraved. Engraving can be done by computers that are programmable to match very precise designs. Rotary engraving uses a small bit that damages the surface to leave the engraved image or text while laser engraving can be even more precise because of the variable diameter of the laser being used to cut the metal. Metals, stones, gemstones, glass, and plastic can all be engraved with different types of engraving.
