Empire earrings

em·er·ald ear·rings | ˈem-ˌpī(-ə)r ir-(ˌ)iŋ

noun

The distinctive hoop shape of Roman earrings from roughly 1st century BC, with freshwater pearls or amethysts, set in sterling silver or gold

As defined by the styles of Roman jewelry in 1st century BC, empire earrings are known for their use of freshwater pearls and amethysts, often set in silver or gold. The distinctive hoop shape is unique to the time period, however, empire jewelry as a whole became fashionable again in the early 19th century through Napoleon. The return to Classic styles of the Greeks and Romans introduced not only empire earrings, but mosaics in jewelry which remained fashionable until the late 19th century. Modern pieces will at times use these elements to make a piece more unique, and antique jewelry in Europe can commonly be found drawing inspiration from the Empire period.
