Horn
horn | ˈhȯrn
noun
A substance often used as a substitute for tortoiseshell
A horn necklace refers to a type of necklace often worn around the neck by either a man or a woman. It is worn as a sign of wealth. The horn necklace in particular has a history in Italy where corno or cornicello were worn to protect against evil. The Italian word “corno” means “horn” and these necklaces (sometimes also pendants) were made from red coral, gold, or sometimes real horn materials. Crescent horn necklaces are worn in veneration of the Virgin Mary due to their symbolization of Diana, who represents virginity in Roman mythology. Today, horn can refer to the material from which a piece is made or the Italian jewelry worn to ward off evil.
