Heirloom

heir·loom | ˈer-ˌlüm

noun

A jewelry piece that descends one or more generations to an heir or heirs

An heirloom piece of jewelry is one that is passed down from generation to generation at least once. Such jewelry is considered especially meaningful because it carries with it the stories and memories of multiple generations. While the financial value and the design of a piece of heirloom jewelry is important, the sentimental value is especially important in ways that may not otherwise factor into the value of a piece of jewelry. An heirloom may become especially important because of when it was given, who gave it, and what it symbolizes, such as a cherished loved one’s wedding ring or something similar.
