noun
An ornament worn around the neck
A necklace is an ornamental piece of jewelry worn around the neck. They have existed as human artifacts since prehistoric times, the full origin unknown, and the styles and types of necklaces have evolved significantly over thousands of years. While necklaces are often symbolic of something for the wearer, modern necklaces are made with precious metals and often adorned with gemstones. These fine jewelry necklaces can be of any number of styles, dating back to the origins of jewelry craft. They may be used to hold a pendant or locket that hangs from the center of the necklace, might hold a precious gemstone, or may be designed to match other pieces of jewelry such as earrings or bracelets.
