Flaw
flaw | ˈflȯ
noun
A general term used to refer to internal or external characteristics of a gemstone (i.e.: inclusion, fracture, etc)
A flaw refers to anything inside of a gemstone or on its surface that can detract from its value based on the perceived characteristics of a high quality gem. This can include a nick or a crack in the girdle of the gem, a crevice that rises to the surface in any part of the gem or any other natural or manmade imperfections on the gem. While flaws generally refer to the natural issues a gem has - inclusions and fractures most often - they can also be created by errors made by the lapidarist including polish marks on the surface, poor cut or lack of symmetry. Not all inclusions are considered flaws, however. In some gemstones, including some garnets, quartz, and emeralds.
