Ok, so I had this idea for a very unique engagement ring for my fiance', and I looked around a *lot*, searching for a jeweler who would be able to make the ring I wanted. I looked up many jewelers who did custom work, and what initially impressed me here was the work that I saw on Joseph's website (and the reviews didn't hurt either). The first positive thing was speaking with Joseph directly. This is definitely not a shop which just bears an absent owner's name. When I spoke with Joseph, he was the first jeweler who expressed no hesitation about being able to meet my design goals (and they were fairly unique). I then emailed him more details and we talked about materials, design options and price. The next positive thing was that Joseph asked for a very reasonable deposit to begin the design process (which in this case involved CAD/CAM). From my perspective, giving a small deposit is actually a good sign - it lets the jeweler know I'm serious, and pays for his time going through various design iterations without me having to be locked into something that may ultimately not be what I'm looking for. At this point, I want to point out something to be aware of with Joseph Jewelry. They did push a bit for extravagance and "bling". Probably from their experience, the more a ring pops and sparkles, the happier many brides-to-be are. This is in no way a bad thing, but something to be aware of - definitely don't be afraid to say what you want! After going back and forth a bit and settling on the basic design idea, Joseph put me in the very capable hands of Bonnie, who began in earnest mocking up designs and working with me to figure out the specifics of the ring. Everything from the stone size, to the design of the shoulder area, and the unique element for my particular ring (sorry, no pics, but it involves a part of the ring moving). With a lot of back and forth with Bonnie, we finally settled on the ultimate design, which I have to say, was stunning. After getting the design done, and getting the ring built, I shipped my diamond to Joseph (they do, of course, sell diamonds too, but I had the diamond I wanted to use) and they fit it perfectly. I sent them a check and they shipped me the ring, and it was just that easy. Two more things to be aware of. First, the ring I had made is, based on appraisals and materials (and of course my own opinion), a pretty high quality piece. But it's not the cheapest. You get what you pay for, part of which is real workmanship, and people who know their craft. Second, my now wife tells me how each and every day, she looks at her ring, she cannot help but smile. Few days go by where a new person who sees her ring for the first time comments on how amazing it is. Five stars.
