Quick facts about rose gold:

Color: Pinkish red (hue can vary)

Price Range: Comparable to yellow gold

Metals Involved: Yellow gold alloyed with copper

History: Carl Fabergé, famous jeweler to the czars of Imperial Russia in the 1800s, was one of the first to incorporate rose gold into his designs.

As time went on, rose gold became more popular as the designs of the 1920s became more lavish and bold. Cartier was a particular fan of rose gold in this era.

Although the Art Nouveau period favored simpler, colorless designs, World War II brought back rose gold's popularity in jewelry because platinum was needed for the war and became extremely scarce.

Since that time, rose gold has captivated a substantial section of the jewelry market.

Pros: Rose gold can be used in any jewelry piece. It especially complements warmer gemstones, but also can provide a strong, appealing contrast to highly graded colorless diamonds. Very few people have an allergy to this metal.

Cons: No metal is better for safely holding gemstones than platinum. However, rose gold is a great option and your gems will still be very safe. It may not favor all skin tones, so it is good to try on some pieces before you purchase.

Pro Tip: If you will have both a rose gold engagement and wedding ring worn together, have them made together so their rosy tones are matched perfectly.
