11 Exquisite Emerald Cut Engagement Rings
Did you know only 3% of the world's natural diamonds are emerald cut? Read on to see how this glamorous cut gives a unique mirror-like sparkle to any custom engagement ring.
What is an emerald cut engagement ring?
An emerald cut engagement ring features an emerald cut center stone. An emerald cut gem is a rectangular shape with clipped corners, making an octagonal shape. The faceting is step-cut.
What is step-cut faceting?
A step-cut diamond features faceting that is cut with long parallel cuts, resulting in parallelogram facets and a look resembling steps. In contrast, "brilliant" faceting features angled cuts, often resulting in triangle and kite facets. Common step cuts are emerald cut and Asscher cut.
Emerald Diamond vs. Radiant Diamond
Both emerald cut diamonds and radiant cut diamonds are rectangular with clipped corners. However, radiant diamonds have triangular faceting, instead of the step cut faceting that is a trademark of the emerald cut. They have very different looks from the top view, although both are elongated. While emerald cut diamonds give the shine and light of several mirrors, a radiant diamond will produce a beautiful traditional sparkle.
What grades should I shop for in an emerald cut diamond?
Because of the flat, open table of an emerald cut diamond, we recommend shopping for a clarity grade of at least VS2. Inclusions (interior blemishes) can be very obvious with this cut! Other than clarity, our usual recommendations apply: F-G color, excellent polish, excellent symmetry. Both natural and lab grown emerald cut diamonds can be sourced.
It's also important to note that emerald cut diamonds tend to appear larger than the same carat weight in a round diamond because of their elongated shape. This shape can give the wearer's finger a longer, slimmer look as well.
Can colored gems be emerald cut?
Most colored gemstones can be found in an emerald cut. In fact, this cut was originally created for emeralds in the 16th century! The long, even cuts reduced pressure on the emerald, which is a softer gem to begin with. Eventually, cutters began to use the same cut on diamonds.
What engagement ring styles can have an emerald cut diamond?
Often, an emerald cut engagement ring design will have a vintage glam aesthetic because the cut rose to popularity in the 1920's Art Deco period. However, any ring can be designed with an emerald cut diamond or gemstone.
